For Unto Us

Isaiah 9:6 NIV: For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Thanksgiving is over, Christmas trees are up, and the first Advent candle has been lit. And so we enter one of the busiest times of the year. In my world, that means gifts to get, kids’ music concerts to attend, work parties, Christmas cards to mail, talent shows, treats to bake, year-end photo books to make, and travel plans to prepare for.

I try to be intentional about not letting the chaos cloud out what this season really is all about, but that takes effort! This week’s art piece was my effort to set time aside and create something that would remind me not to miss the significant gift of Christ who was given to the world.

The verse reminds us that a baby was given to us. This baby, God incarnate, ushered in the Kingdom of God here on earth. God’s kingdom is in stark contrast to the types of kingdoms we value in our secular world. It is a kingdom of loving others, seeking peace, being filled with joy, enduring hardships with hope, and whittling away our egos.

Here’s the thing: There isn’t anything wrong with all of the traditions of this time of year. The music, lights, movies, gifts, activities, etc. are wonderful! Just don’t let all the good things distract you so that you miss the true gift of our Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace!
