Faithful Readiness

Judges 4:9 NIV: “…the honor will not be yours, for the LORD will deliver Sisera into the hands of a woman.”

If you think the Old Testament lacks drama, Judges 4 would like a word.

It is a story of prophecy, fear, military defeat, and an unexpected heroine living quietly in a tent. This verse, spoken by Deborah, the prophetess and leader of Israel, comes after the general of the Israelite army admitted he would not go into battle unless Deborah accompanied him, despite the Lord already promising victory.

The consequence of his fear and doubt was not defeat but the loss of the glory of victory.  Deborah prophesied that a woman would receive this honor.  Though you might assume this would be Deborah herself, the story goes on to describe a gruesome and unexpected twist in the death of Sisera, the general of Israel’s enemy oppressors.  

The heroine is Jael, the wife of a nomadic herdsman, living an ordinary tent-dwelling life far from positions of power or influence. She wasn’t seeking glory or renown; she was simply living faithfully when trouble arrived. Sisera, stripped of his chariot and fleeing the Israelite army, arrived at Jael’s tent and asked for water and for shelter.  

Jael instead gives him milk and encourages him to hide and rest under some blankets.  In no time, he is asleep.  What follows is shocking, violent, and impossible to forget. Jael grabs a tent peg and a hammer and drives the peg through Sisera’s head, killing him instantly.  

If you are scratching your head, wondering why I chose this as the subject of my artwork this week, let me expand on the lessons we learn from this story. 

Jael reminds us that women often play a pivotal role in God’s story.  Not only do we still know her name, but in chapter 5, Deborah also calls her “most blessed of women” for her courage and willingness to act.  

Jael wasn’t seeking honor, yet when the moment arrived, she used what she had at hand. The very skill she practiced in daily life became part of Israel’s deliverance. This raises a question for us. What ordinary everyday actions in your life could God use for his purposes? As we know, God often works through people who are simply faithful where they already are. 

May this artwork remind you that some of the most important spiritual battles are not the ones we go looking for, but the ones that unexpectedly arrive at our doorstep.
